Gwen
“I think Quinn’s in real trouble,” India began.
“That would be no surprise, child,” Gwen said, as the two swung back and forth on Gwen’s porch spring and watched yellow and red leaves drift to the ground.
India’s aura wasn’t too good, Gwen decided. Indeed, what kind of color would that one be? India’s aura wavered, staggered, pulled out and pulled in, but the color seemed to be olive green mostly, mixed with a hideous raspberry shade. Not a pretty aura. In fact, it seemed to be fighting with itself.
“You ain’t lookin’ too good, girl,” Gwen said. “Being back in your hometown don’t agree with you?”
“Maybe not,” India said. “For a small town, everything seems so complicated here. New York seems simple compared to this.”
“So, what’s goin’ on now,” Gwen said. She watched India pull her cell phone out of her jacket pocket, punch in a few buttons and hand it over.
“Look at this.”
Gwen took the phone and watched Quinn grinning crookedly at the camera, brushing her bangs aside, reaching out for the bottle clearly labeled Jack Daniels, tipping it back, accepting a cigarette, inhaling, blowing out smoke, giggling, gulping from the bottle again.
Gwen gasped.
The women looked at each other, so close on the swing they could feel one another’s breath.
“Have you told Shelby?” Gwen asked.
“I haven’t said a word. I told her about what I saw with the scars, and she acted like I had no reason to be concerned. She’d blow sky high if I said anything” India shifted on the swing. “I don’t even know if she’s noticed Quinn’s been acting strange lately.”
“Stranger than usual, you mean? Hold on a second, I reckon we could talk better about this with a Coke. Hang on, I’ll bring us some.”
Gwen handed India a bottle of Coca Cola. “You were saying,” she said as she settled back in the swing. “You know, I haven’t seen Quinn in weeks, which isn’t usual. What color’s her hair now?”
“Oh, come on, Gwen. And it’s brown. She’s gone back to her regular color for right now.”
“Hunh. Well, that would be strange,” Gwen said, putting the bottle to her lips. “Pretty, but strange.”
“It looks nice. I mean, it does.”
“But anyway,” Gwen said.
“But anyway, something’s going on with her. Before the fire happened, she went out with that boy, Adrian, and Ivy, to some kind of party. I didn’t know much about it. Shelby said it was okay for her to go, so she left with them, and then she missed curfew, and when she returned home, she buried herself in her room. She wouldn’t talk, she didn’t do anything. Things got better, but now, since Adrian’s been gone… she’s been skipping school, she’s been really secretive.”
“Did you ask her about it?”
“Yeah, I did, and she looked at me like I was speaking Japanese, turned around and shut herself in her room and locked the door.” India said. “But that’s not all. I got a voicemail message from Adrian.”
“Adrian?” Gwen scrunched her face up in surprise.
“Yeah, yeah, but listen,” India began.
